Dust Control
Dust control has been applied for the year 2008 already. The rate was $400 for two 500 ft applications, and $250 if only one application is desired. The Dept. of Transportation and Government Services has also again provided grant-in-aid funding to provide dust control for the town sites of Hargrave, Kirkella, and Kola.
Road Bans
The R.M. of Wallace imposes road bans on all roads each spring from approx. the beginning of March until the end of May. This follows Department of Transportation and Government Services guidelines, and during this time the RM. of Wallace has a road commissioner on duty to do random inspections.
We encourage all users of our roads (ratepayers or not) to continue their cooperation during this time, as it is physically and economically beneficial to everyone to keep our roads in the best shape possible.
Restrictions for the last few years have been set at 60 kg/mm of tire width for gravel and 75 kg/mm tire width for hardtack.
Grading
Safety of our staff and anyone using our roads is a constant consideration in the R.M. of Wallace. This is especially true in the winter months when ratepayers can help by keeping approaches clear of brush and staying back and being aware when you meet a grader on the road; they may not be able to see you, despite the improvements that have been made in the design of the graders to increase operator vision.
It is also requested that snow is not pushed across municipal roads into the opposite ditch when clearing snow, as this creates a solid ridge that creates an unnecessary safety concern.
Operators will perform one free clearing (one trip down and back) of a lane per season if there is a flag marker placed at the end of the lane a resident wants cleared. Subsequent visits are charged and a rate of $40.00 plus tax. For rates on other custom work, please contact the R.M. office.
Weed Control
Roadside weed and brush control spraying is performed each year in an effort to stay ahead of weeds listed under the Noxious Weed Act such as leafy spurge, scentless chamomille, baby's breath, foxtail barley, thistle and milkweed. The Wallace Weed Control Supervisor has also performed larviciding for mosquito control under the Manitoba West Nile Surveillance Program. For a complete list of chemicals use or questions on a specific weed issue, please contact the Weed Supervisor directly.
If a ratepayer wishes for any reason not to have his or her property sprayed, they are asked to contact the Weed Supervisor and a buffer will be observed. However, if weeds under the Noxious Weeds Act are not controlled by some other method, spot spraying on private property by the municipality is authorized under that Act if needed.
