Biography

Situated along the Manitoba/Saskatchewan border approximately 75 km north of the Canada/United States border, the R.M. of Wallace has a distinct advantage when it comes to any kind of industry or trade. Placed roughly halfway between Winnipeg and Regina, two of North America’s longest highways intersect here to create large opportunities with a small population of 1547. Wallace was established out of Dennis County in 1886, and early Councils were instrumental in initiating such programs as the Manitoba Good Roads Program. Wallace was also one of the first rural areas in Manitoba to receive telephone service.

Mixed agriculture production has always been a staple industry of the area, but the discovery of oil in 1951 led to unprecedented growth and development of the local economy that continues today. The area currently has approximately 1027 producing wells, and with current exploration and drilling, this number is expected to continue rising in the next couple of years. As a result, the Rural Municipalities of Wallace, Sifton, Pipestone and Woodworth are home to 20 oil producing companies and a further 24 oil field service and supply companies

The R.M. of Wallace has an excellent infrastructure system that allows for the support of many industries beyond the oil sector. Year round access to highways and the Canadian Pacific rail mainline allows Wallace to host two grain elevators and a sodium chlorate plant and a feed mill in the community of Kola. These industries require a lot of water, and in an effort to be progressive in supporting the needs of current and future industry and residents, the R.M. of Wallace began construction in 2004 on an $13 million dollar rural water pipeline system. One hundred and fifty users are already on stream and have enjoyed the benefits of a steady supply of clean, safe water.

Other services the area provides include natural gas, high speed internet, hydro electricity, and 24 hr Life Flight access through the Bob Andrews Memorial airport.

Recreational facilities available include campgrounds, groomed snowmobile and cross country ski trails, golf courses, indoor curling and skating rinks, fitness centres, soccer and baseball fields, as well as access to three near by libraries and the Aud Theatre, one of the oldest opera houses in Western Canada.

Events in the area include the annual Wild West Rodeo days in August, and the Virden and Elkhorn Agricultural Fairs in July.  Other year round attractions a tourist might visit include the Manitoba Antique Automobile Museum in Elkhorn, the Virden Pioneer Home Museum, or nearby Oak Lake beach and Eternal Springs for those who want a quiet place to hike, picnic, or fish.

The R.M. of Wallace area has housing options available for someone in any stage of life, from Senior Life Lease and Personal Care facilities to a varied selection of rental properties and three builders specializing in custom built ready to move homes.

Providing all the essential services to support a thriving economy in both small business and industry is a challenge the R.M. of Wallace has consistently met, and will continue to excel at in the future.
